एक बार एक टोपी वाला पास के गांव में टोपियां बेचने जा रहा था। चलते-चलते वह थक गया तो वह एक पेड़ के नीचे बैठ गया। फिर उसने खाना खाया। खाना खाकर उसने सोचा थोड़ा आराम कर लूं। वह आराम करने लगा तभी उसकी आंख लग गई। उस पेड़ पर बहुत सारे बंदर रहते थे।

जब वह टोपी वाला सो गया तो सारे बंदर नीचे उतर के आए और उसकी गठरी खोल ली। उस गठरी से सारी टोपियां निकाली एक बंदर एक टोपी लेकर पेड़ पर चढ़ गया जब टोपी वाले की आंख खुली तो उसने देखा कि उसकी सारी टोपियां गायब हैं।

उसने आस-पास देखा उसे कोई दिखाई नहीं दिया। फिर उसकी नजर ऊपर गई तो देखा कि बंदर टोपी पहने हुए बैठे हैं अब उसने टोपिया लेने के लिए बंदरों से कहा तो बंदरों ने टोपिया नहीं गिराई फिर वह नीचे से पत्थर उठाकर फेंकने लगा बंदरों ने भी उसकी नकल करते हुए पेड़ से अमरुद तोड़कर उसकी तरफ फेंकने लगे।

टोपी वाला परेशान हो गया काफी देर बाद उसे एक उपाय सूझा उसने अपने सिर पर से टोपी उतार कर जमीन पर फेंक दी। नकलची बंदरों ने भी अपने-अपने सिर से टोपी उतार कर जमीन पर फेंक दी। चतुर टोपी वाले ने सारी टोपिया एकत्रित कीं और गठरी में बांधकर वहां से चला गया।

Once a cap seller was going to sell caps in a nearby village. He got tired of walking so he sat under a tree. Then he ate food. After eating food he thought of taking some rest. He started resting and then he fell asleep. A lot of monkeys lived on that tree. When the cap seller fell asleep, all the monkeys came down and opened his bundle.

They took out all the caps from that bundle. One monkey took one cap and climbed the tree. When the cap seller opened his eyes, he saw that all his caps were missing. He looked around but he did not see anyone. Then he looked up and saw that the monkeys were sitting wearing caps. Now he asked the monkeys to take the caps but the monkeys did not drop the caps.

Then he started picking up stones from below and throwing them. The monkeys also started imitating him and breaking guavas from the tree and throwing them at him. The cap seller got upset. After a long time he thought of a solution. He removed the cap from his head and threw it on the ground.

The imitating monkeys also removed their caps from their heads and threw them on the ground. The clever hat seller collected all the hats, tied them in a bundle and went away from there.
