International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also serves as a call to action for accelerating women’s equality .
Women’s rights-
This year’s theme is “For all women and girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment”, emphasizing the need for collective action to ensure equal rights, power, and opportunities for all women and girls.
The theme is particularly significant in 2025, as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark agreement adopted by 189 governments to promote women’s rights and empowerment.
Another challenge-
Despite progress made since the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action, women and girls continue to face significant challenges, including violence, discrimination, and inequality.
According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2024, it will take another 134 years to reach gender parity.
To address these challenges, the United Nations has outlined six actions that governments can take to promote women’s rights and empowerment, including:
Advance women’s and girls’ rights- Fight relentlessly for women’s and girls’ full range of human rights, challenging all forms of violence, discrimination, and exploitation.
Promote gender equality- Address systemic barriers, dismantle patriarchy, transform entrenched inequities, and elevate the voices of marginalized women and girls.
Foster empowerment- Redefine power structures by ensuring inclusive access to education, employment, leadership, and decision-making spaces.
